Project Update

Galway County Council and Westmeath County Council have commenced jointly establishing a multi-party framework  for the provision of technical consultancy services for delivery of the Galway to Athlone National Cycleway following the termination of the previous consultancy contract.

This Framework is being established to provide the two local authorities responsible for the delivery of various sections of the Galway to Athlone National Cycleway with a framework from which to tender and award contracts for consultancy services.

Due to its scale, the Galway to Athlone National Cycleway Scheme will be delivered as two separate schemes as follows:

Scheme 1 Galway to Portumna will be managed by Galway County Council. The scheme is approximately 114km in length between Ballyloughane and Portumna Castle and links to the Western extent of the existing Waterways Ireland Greenway section at Portumna Castle.

Scheme 2 Portumna to Athlone will be managed by Westmeath County Council. The scheme is approximately 83 km in length between Portumna Marina and Athlone Castle, including a link to Ballinasloe, and links to the Eastern extent of the existing Waterways Ireland Greenway section at Portumna Marina adjacent to the N65.
